Why the Inn?

The first thing that would be asked is, “What makes this inn so important that it deserves so much attention?” Three things stand out.

The Views

The Monhegan Island Inn showcases local works of art throughout its premises. The waterfront rooms also offer stunning views of the sunset over Manana Island. At the same time, the Pierce Cottage, one of the architectural elements of the inn, provides vistas of the village and Maine’s second-tallest lighthouse.

The Atmosphere

The charming ambiance on Monhegan Island is both laid-back and sophisticated. Strolling along the dirt roads, you’ll see local artists creating their masterpieces, as breathtaking views are everywhere you look. Life on this island also moves slowly, with no rush or hurry. Finally, the staff is extremely hospitable and attentive, catering to every need to the best of their abilities.

The History

Frank Pierce originally bought the Pink House in 1906, starting the story of The Island Inn. The Tribler sisters later took over in 1924. During the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, Theodore Edison, son of inventor Thomas Edison, frequented the island and became aware of plans to sell off portions of it for development, including the headlands and woods.

To prevent the building on these beloved areas, he began purchasing the land as it became available. Although he never owned a cottage on the island, he and his wife Ann chose to stay at The Island Inn. Today, the inn welcomes all guests, including those previously visited, such as famous inventors.

The Architecture of the Great Inn

The architecture of The Island Inn reflects the popular turn-of-the-century summer hotel style, which was frequently replicated in the early 1900s. Originally known as the Pink House, the main building was created in 1816. But due to the rising number of visitors to Monhegan [for clear reasons that the island is fantastic], the building was extended in 1907, and the final expansion occurred in 1910 to create the current appearance of The Island Inn.

The Pierce Cottage is definitely worth checking out, as it is situated on the meadow road and overlooks the lighthouse, offering some truly breathtaking views of the island. This cottage was added to The Island Inn property in 1924.

In recent years, extensive renovations have been undertaken to upgrade all the interior spaces, including the addition of numerous private bathrooms and the refurbishment of many of the rooms and suites while still retaining the Inn’s authentic period style.

The rooms boast painted floors, original antique oak furniture, and, most importantly, new, ultra-comfortable beds outfitted with down duvets and pristine white linens.

The Infrastructure and Amenities

To promote a peaceful and uncluttered environment, the Inn has chosen to ban modern amenities such as televisions and telephones in the accommodation.

Guests should be aware that only the lobby and dining room of the main building are heated, although the Pierce Cottage has recently installed a new heating system to keep its rooms cozy throughout the seasons.

To ensure a comfortable stay, it is recommended that visitors come equipped with sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, binoculars, a flashlight, a windbreaker and sweater, a camera with an extra battery, and possibly even thermal underwear for the cooler months.

Things to Do in Monhegan Island

First-time visitors to Monhegan Island often ask themselves whether there will be enough activities to keep them occupied. While many people come to the island to unwind and enjoy a more relaxed pace of life, there are still plenty of things to see and do in the town and the surrounding wilderness.

  • You can hike through the cliff sides, the forest, and the meadow trails.
  • The Monhegan Museum of Art & History is known for its unique summer exhibits and shows that feature works by many popular artists. You can always check them out.
  • The Lupine Gallery also features some of the works from Monhegan’s contemporary artists.
  • The Barnacle Cafe on the wharf sometimes hosts musicians from near and far. Visitors and locals can also gather at The Barnacle Cafe on Thursday evenings for trivia, games, and other fun events.
  • Finally, sample local craft ale at the Monhegan Brewing Company tasting room.

From the guide, it is already clear that the inn is not just a feature of Monhegan Island but also highly popular and frequently visited. The inn has breathtaking and strategic views of the island, a notable history that makes it even more fascinating, and, most of all, the inn has a peaceful atmosphere.
